Introduction about Vishay Siliconix ThunderFET Power MOSFETs

ABOUT Vishay Siliconix

Vishay, through its Siliconix subsidiary, leads the industry in the development of power semiconductor products that improve the efficiency of power management circuitry in end products while reducing space requirements. As the world's number-one brand of low-voltage power MOSFETs (metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors), Vishay Siliconix products play a key role in making handheld and portable electronic systems operate more efficiently from smaller and lighter battery packs. Higher-voltage Vishay Siliconix power MOSFETs are used for applications from electric motor control in industrial systems to converting power in the switches and routers that enable the world's communications networks. Vishay Siliconix power ICs address markets ranging from mobile communications and computing to the fixed telecom infrastructure and include switchmode regulators, linear regulators, and power management devices. A number of devices, built on specialized process flows, are purpose-made for the medical, automotive, and military markets.

Vishay Siliconix milestones include the first analog switch, the first analog multiplexer, the first small-outline power MOSFET (LITTLE FOOT®), and the first power MOSFETs built on Trench technology (TrenchFET®). This tradition of innovation continues with new silicon technologies designed to maximize power MOSFET performance. In dc-to-dc conversion and load switching, Vishay Siliconix leads the market with high-density TrenchFET silicon processes and innovative package options for better thermal performance (PowerPAK®, PolarPAK®), smaller footprints (ChipFET®, MICRO FOOT®, PowerPAK SC-70, PowerPAK SC-75), and integration of multiple devices (PowerPAIR®). Vishay Siliconix power ICs focus on delivering the optimal and appropriate level of integration for power management and conversion. Recent innovations include the industry’s most powerful DrMOS solution for managing the core voltage in PCs, servers, and other CPU-based systems, and the new microBUCK™ dc-to-dc converter family, which combines the controller IC, MOSFETs, and bootstrap switch for a buck regulator in a tiny 4-mm2 package. The Vishay Siliconix product portfolio now also features high-voltage planar MOSFETs acquired from International Rectifier.
Siliconix was founded in 1962. In 1998, Vishay acquired the Semiconductor Business Group of TEMIC, which included 80.4% of Siliconix. Vishay purchased the remaining 19.6% of Siliconix shares in 2005.

1.Vishay Siliconix ThunderFET Power MOSFETs Description

Vishay Siliconix ThunderFET Power MOSFETs offer the lowest values of on-resistance in the industry for 100V MOSFETs with 4.5V ratings. In addition to the product of on-resistance and gate charge - a key figure of merit (FOM) for MOSFETs in DC-DC Converter applications is also best in class. For designers, the lower on-resistance translates into lower conduction losses and reduced power consumption for energy-saving green solutions. These devices are optimized for primary side switching and secondary side synchronous rectification in isolated DC/DC power supply designs for telecom brick and bus converter applications. The MOSFETs' 4.5 V rating for on-resistance allows a wide range of PWM and gate driver ICs to be considered.

4.Related Vishay Products  The new ThunderFET™ SiR880DP

New Vishay Siliconix ThunderFET™ Power MOSFET is Industry’s First 80-V MOSFET with On-Resistance Specified at 4.5-V Gate Drive, with Value of 8.5 mΩ

The new ThunderFET™ SiR880DP is the first 80-V power MOSFET with an on-resistance rating at a 4.5-V gate drive. Packaged in the thermally enhanced PowerPAK® SO-8, the new 80-V SiR880DP offers ultra-low on-resistances of 8.5 mΩ at 4.5 V, 6.7 mΩ at 7.5 V, and 5.9 mΩ at 10 V. Typical on-resistance times gate charge, a key figure of merit (FOM, expressed in nC-mΩ) for MOSFETs in dc-to-dc converter applications, is 161 at 4.5 V.

The SiR880DP is optimized for primary side switching in isolated do-to-dc converters for telecom point-of-load applications. Its very low on-resistance translates into reduced power consumption and greener solutions, especially at light loads such as stand-by mode.

The device’s 4.5-V rating is conducive to higher-frequency designs, enabling significantly lower gate drive losses in POL applications while allowing lower-voltage/lower-cost 5-V PWM ICs to be utilized. Until now, 80-V power MOSFETs were only available with on-resistance ratings at a 6-V gate drive or higher.

The SiR880DP is 100 % Rg- and UIS-tested. The PowerPAK SO-8 MOSFET is halogen-free according to the IEC 61249-2-21 definition and compliant to RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC.Samples of the SiR880DP are available now. Production quantities are available now, with lead times of 16 weeks for large orders.
