Vishay launches new ambient light sensor for smart watches and sports bracelets

The new space-saving sensor features patented filter technology and measures 2 mm x 2 mm x 0.4 mm.

MALVERN, PA — July 10, 2019 — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today announced that its Optoelectronics division has introduced a new ambient light sensor for compact applications such as smart watches and sports bracelets -- - VEML6035, these applications require very high sensitivity because of the need to be able to sensitize through a lens that is often very dark. The Vishay Semiconductors VEML6035 integrates high sensitivity photodiodes, low noise amplifiers and 16-bit ADCs in a compact, transparent surface mount package of 2 mm x 2 mm x 0.4 mm. The sensor uses an active interrupt function that can be initiated by a threshold window setting to eliminate the motherboard load.

The VEML6035 is easily controlled with simple I2C commands for mobile device display dimming, such as smartphones and wearables, as well as optical switches for a variety of consumer, computing and industrial applications. The ultra-thin thickness of 0.4 mm provides a large number of design choices for display management systems in space-constrained designs.

Vishay's patented Filtron® wafer-level filter technology delivers ambient light spectral sensitivity close to the human eye. The sensor detects highly linear behavior from 0.004 lx to 6710 lx with resolutions as low as 0.0004 lx/ct for applications with low visibility (dark) lenses. With a sensor height of only 0.4 mm, the sensor offers many new options for design management with extremely limited space. The VEML6035 rejects 100 Hz and 120 Hz stroboscopic noise, and excellent temperature compensation provides stability over ambient temperature changes. The sensor consumes only 170 μA in the operating mode and 0.5 μA in the programmable shutdown mode.

The VEML6035 supply voltage and I2C bus voltage range from 1.7 V to 3.6 V. The device is available in a Pb-free (6-pin) package and is RoHS and Vishay green, halogen-free.

Samples of the new ambient light sensors are available now and are in volume production. The lead time for major orders is 16 weeks.
