NXP has selected Macronix as its preferred QSPI Serial NOR Flash vendor for the NXP LPC1800/4000/4300 ARM Cortex M3/M4 MCU line. The Macronix MX25Lxxx35/33/45 3V serial flash product family is the ideal match for these microcontrollers with SPIFI interface; this is due to the wide density range from 8Mbit (1MB) to 1Gbit (128MB), the high-speed Quad Interface, excellent quality and broad range package options available (8SOP, 16SOP, 8WSON, 8USON).
NXP is well known for its high quality products and long term availability within the electronic industry. As external flash is a critical component for a microcontroller for code or data storage, NXP was looking for a partner within the flash memory industry that could meet the exact same standards. With Macronix, it has found this partner. By owning its own fabs, Macronix can deliver best in class quality and provide long term longevity program for all product lines.
At the Macronix booth at the recent Electronica 2014 show in Munich, Germany, Jim Trent, Vice President BU Microcontrollers of NXP, and Dr. Miin Wu, founder and CEO of Macronix, were both interviewed by elektroniknet.de and commented on the Macronix-NXP business relationship.
Jim Trent: "We have been working with Macronix for some time now. We have a special flash interface on the LPC1800/400/4300 ARM Cortex M3/M4, called SPIFI which supports Quad SPI Flash. Because of Macronix's longevity program, this has developed into a great partnership.
NXP customers are requesting for higher densities of on board flash. Integrating this is not cost effectively and using a Quad SPI Flash is the perfect solution, whether it's for LCD control, which has a lot of memory demand, or if you want to execute out of external Flash. Looking at the marketplace, of white goods or anything with an LCD controller, it's a great solution."
Dr Miin Wu of Macronix replied, "NXP is a well known company in the global market and by working with NXP we hope to expand our business with them. In the longer term, we hope to work with NXP in a partnership to develop new solutions and a new architecture. That will benefit both partners."
The biggest benefit of our partnership with NXP will be to the customers. To reduce development work and shorten time-to-market of their end products, our customers can rely on a tested and proven combination of the LPC 1800/4000/4300 microcontroller with the MX25L Serial flash due to the very intense collaboration between both companies at all levels. From initial chip design through low-level software driver development to joined technical support, both companies are teaming up to provide optimized solutions.
The evolution of the serial flash interface for higher throughput, while keeping a low pin count will be a defining factor in the future success of the NXP high-performance ARM Cortex M microcontroller product range.
Macronix, a leading integrated device manufacturer in the non-volatile memory (NVM) market, provides a full range of NOR Flash, NAND Flash, and ROM products. With its world-class R&D and manufacturing capability, Macronix continues to deliver high-quality, innovative and performance-driven products to its customers in the consumer, communication, computing, automotive, networking and other segment markets.
