Stereo audio codec boosts performance

Delivering high-quality audio in mobile multimedia devices, the 24-bit AK4953A stereo audio codec features multiple analog input and output interfaces, and a dynamic range of 96 dB. Up to four analog microphones can be connected, as well as a stereo digital PDM microphone and a stereo line level input. The microphone interface includes a programmable gain amplifier, and a microphone power supply.

The outputs include a mono BTL speaker driver and a stereo capless headphone driver. The speaker driver can be operated off of a single cell battery, as low as 0.9 V. Providing up to 400 mW of output power with a 3.3-V power supply, the speaker driver is specified with a very low –70-dB THD+N, and a 95-dB SNR.

The headphone driver is ground-referenced, using an integrated charge pump to create a negative rail, delivering 24 mW into 8 Ω at –80 dB THD+N. The headphone output is pop-noise free, with a maximum output offset of ± 1 mV, eliminating large and costly coupling capacitors.

The core power supply is 3.0 or 3.3 V typ, with a 1.8-V digital supply and a speaker driver supply ranging from 0.9 to 5.5 V. In record mode, current consumption is just 3.3 mA, and only 3.6 mA in playback mode through the headphone amplifier. (From $1.53 ea/10,000 available now.)

As a leading provider of mixed-signal IC's for consumer, automotive, and communications applications,AKM Semiconductor is a wholly owned subsidiary of Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM), Tokyo, Japan.
