SUNNYVALE, CA-May 14, 2009-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the DS8313, a low-power, low-cost, smart-card interface. This device performs level translation between a host microcontroller and a 5V, 3V, or 1.8V smart card, while providing up to 80mA for smart-card operation. The DS8313 features the industry's lowest power stop mode (10nA, typ), allowing applications to support smart-card communication without increasing the power budget. In addition, it provides ±8kV ESD protection (IEC) to prevent damage to the application during card insertion and removal. Designed for ISO 7816 and B-CAS applications, the DS8313 is ideal for pay/premium television, financial terminals, consumer set-top boxes, SIM card readers, and smart-card reader products.
The DS8313 is functionally compatible with devices such as the TDA8024 and the ST8024 that have higher power consumption and no stop mode. It supports applications that do not require communication with the C4 and C8 smart-card pins.
The DS8313 operates over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range and is available in lead-free 28-pin SO and TSSOP packages. Prices start at $0.60 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit is currently in development-contact the factory for availability.
SUNNYVALE, CA-January 26, 2009-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX15023, a low-cost, dual-output, synchronous step-down controller capable of driving external MOSFETs to deliver at least 12A per output. Operating over a wide, 4.5V to 28V input range, this device integrates a ±1% accurate voltage reference to provide an accurate output voltage from 0.6V to 85% of the input voltage. The switching frequency (200kHz to 1MHz), external compensation network, and current limit can also be adjusted to optimize designs in terms of space, performance, and cost. This combination of versatility and performance makes the MAX15023 suitable for a variety of high-reliability applications such as telecom, networking, storage, and server equipment.
The MAX15023 uses cycle-by-cycle lossless current sensing to reduce power loss and eliminate the need for an external sense resistor. Additionally, the device's adaptive synchronization eliminates external freewheeling Schottky diodes. Other features include the ability to start up monotonically when the output has a prebiased voltage; proprietary, adaptive digital soft-start for controlled turn-on; and two independent enable inputs and two independent power-good indicators with precise turn-on/turn-off thresholds, which can be used for supply monitoring and power sequencing.

SUNNYVALE, CA-December 17, 2008-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX16834, a current-mode, high-brightness LED (HB LED) driver for boost, buck-boost, SEPIC, and high-side buck topologies. This device is designed to reduce the size, complexity, and cost of solid-state lighting (SSL) designs such as MR16 spotlights, thus simplifying the implementation of green lighting technology. Towards this end, it integrates a high-side, current-sense amplifier; a PWM-dimming MOSFET driver; and robust protection circuitry. Providing the efficiency and thermal-management capabilities critical to LED system designs, the MAX16834 is ideal for applications such as LED automotive exterior lighting, LCD backlighting, and architectural lighting.
The MAX16834's comprehensive feature set enables the implementation of boost or buck-boost DC-DC converters with minimal external components. In addition to driving an n-channel power MOSFET by the switching controller, the MAX16834 drives an n-channel PWM-dimming switch to achieve a wide, 3000:1 PWM-dimming range. To further enhance design flexibility, the device offers analog dimming that allows the LED current to be controlled by an external DC voltage. The built-in, high-voltage current-sense amplifier and up to 1MHz switching frequency allow designs to be optimized in terms of efficiency and size.
The MAX16834 integrates protection circuitry to ensure reliable operation in rugged environments. The driver provides analog thermal-foldback protection to allow the use of an external thermistor (NTC) to reduce the LED current when the temperature of the LED string exceeds a specified temperature point. Additionally, it includes a fault-output flag for overvoltage, overcurrent, and thermal warning faults, while its programmable, true-differential overvoltage protection meets stringent automotive requirements for LED lighting and display backlighting.
MAX16834 features a proprietary (patent pending) solution that provides excellent (> 92%) input power factor correction without the need for an additional PFC controller. This feature, together with thermal-foldback protection and low cost, makes this HB LED driver ideal for MR16 spotlights and similar applications powered from AC voltage sources.
SUNNYVALE, CA-June 15, 2009-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX19996A, a fully integrated, 2000MHz to 3900MHz downconverting mixer with an on-chip LO buffer. Designed using Maxim's proprietary, monolithic SiGe BiCMOS process, this device delivers an unparalleled combination of linearity, noise performance, and component integration over an exceptionally wide band of operation. The MAX19996A provides a fully integrated downconversion channel, with +24.5dBm (typ) IIP3, 8.7dB (typ) conversion gain, and 9.8dB (typ) noise figure. Additionally, it features an industry-best 2LO-2RF spurious rejection of 67dBc for an RF level of -10dBm, and 62dBc for a level of -5dBm. The MAX19996A is designed specifically for 3G/4G wireless-infrastructure applications in which high linearity and a low noise figure are critical for enhanced receiver sensitivity and blocker immunity. This device supports both high- and low-side LO injection architectures for 2.3GHz to 2.9GHz WCS, LTE, WiMAX(TM), and MMDS base stations; in addition, the MAX19996A can be configured for 3.1GHz to 3.9GHz WiMAX and LTE low-side injection architectures as well.
As a complete SiGe downconverter, the MAX19996A integrates a state-of-the-art mixer core, two amplifiers, two baluns, and dozens of discrete components. This device's 8.7dB conversion gain enables the elimination of a complete IF amplifier stage within the receiver lineup. The MAX19996A's outstanding 2LO-2RF performance can also ease the filtering requirements of close-in harmonics, thus leading to simpler, more cost-effective filter designs. Through this combination of integration and performance, this device reduces downconverter solution size by a factor of 2x, and the discrete part count by 34%.
The MAX19996A is packaged in a compact, 5mm x 5mm, 20-pin TQFN that is pin compatible with the MAX19996 (a 2000MHz to 3000MHz single mixer). It is also pin similar to the MAX9993/MAX9994/MAX9996 (1700MHz to 2200MHz mixers) and the MAX9984/MAX9986 (400MHz to 1000MHz mixers). The charger employs a high switching frequency (4MHz, typ) to minimize heat and charge time, while allowing the use of tiny external components. To further reduce solution size, the 4mm x 4mm MAX8903A includes all power switches and current-sense circuitry required for charging and switching the load between battery and external power. This device is optimized for rechargeable, 1-cell lithium-ion (Li+) batteries, making it ideal for smartphones, mobile internet devices, portable media players, portable navigation devices, digital still cameras, and ultra-mobile PCs.
The MAX8903A can operate with either separate inputs for USB and AC-adapter power or from a single input that accepts both. When external power is connected, the Smart Power Selector circuitry allows the system to operate with no battery or a deeply discharged battery. It automatically switches the system load from the battery and makes the best use of limited USB or adapter power while charging the battery from input power not used by the system.
The converter on the DC input has a wide, 4.1V to 16V input range for direct charging from USB, AC-adapter, and car charger inputs; the dedicated USB input operates from 4.1V to 6.6V. The DC-input current limit is adjustable up to 2A, and both the DC and USB inputs support 100mA, 500mA, and USB suspend modes. Charge current is adjustable up to 2A to support a wide range of battery capacities. Other MAX8903A features include thermal regulation, overvoltage protection, charge-status and fault outputs, power-OK monitors, a battery thermistor monitor, and a charge timer.

SUNNYVALE, CA - June 24, 2009 - Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX7036 very-low-IF, superheterodyne receiver for ASK/OOK data in the 300MHz to 450MHz frequency range. Only requiring a few external components to implement a complete receiver-chain solution, this device integrates an LNA; self-contained PLL block; 400kHz IF filter with RSSI; and analog baseband, data-recovery circuitry. To ensure excellent, consistent receiver sensitivity of -109dBm, these critical blocks have been designed to operate over the -40°C to +105°C temperature range. The MAX7036 is ideal for applications such as remote keyless-entry systems, car alarms, home security systems, remote controls, and garage door openers.
The MAX7036 requires few external components and has a power-down pin to put it in a low-current sleep mode, making it ideal for cost- and power-sensitive applications. The integration of the IF filter eliminates the need for an external ceramic filter, thus reducing the bill of materials. The device also contains an automatic gain control (AGC) circuit that reduces the LNA gain by 30dB when the input signal power is large.
The MAX7036 operates from either a 3.3V or 5V power supply. It draws less than 1µA (typ) in shutdown mode, and only 5.5mA (typ) in receive mode. Fully specified over the -40°C to +105°C temperature range, the MAX7036 is available in a 20-pin TQFN package. Prices start at $2.00 (1000-up, FOB USA).
