July 24, according to VentureBeat, with the launch of a new generation of 5G cellular networks in the US, South Korea and other countries within a few months, Qualcomm（NASDAQ：QCOM ） announced the launch of two very important new components, the world's first complete Integrated, 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) antenna module for mobile devices and sub-6 GHz RF module.

These components will enable smartphones to connect to the upcoming 5G mmWave network, a result that was once considered impossible.
Qualcomm's QTM052 mmWave antenna module and QPM56xx sub-6 GHz RF module are designed to work with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X50 5G modem to help handle different radio frequencies. The mmWave antenna can be used in the 26.5-29.5 GHz, 27.5-28.35 GHz or 37-40 GHz band, while the sub-6 GHz module can be used in the 3.3-4.2 GHz, 3.3-3.8 GHz or 4.4-5.0 GHz band. Regulators in each country are currently determining which mmWave and sub-6 GHz bands will be used for 5G services in their respective territories.

Although the sub-6 GHz module uses a similar radio frequency as existing wireless phones, the mmWave module is a major breakthrough. Qualcomm pointed out that mmWave was once considered to be difficult to integrate into mobile devices, and the challenges include “materials, form factors, industrial design, thermal components, and regulatory requirements for radiant power supplies”. But the engineers finally solved the engineering problem.
Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon explained that today's announcement of the first commercial 5G NR mmWave antenna module and sub-6 GHz RF module is a very important milestone for smartphones and the entire mobile industry. . These solutions cover the mmWave and sub-6 GHz bands, making large-scale commercialization of mobile 5G networks and devices, especially smartphones. With 5G, consumers can expect gigabit speeds and very fast response times, which will change the mobile experience. ”
To provide high network throughput in dense urban areas and crowded indoor environments, the QTM052 supports bandwidths up to 800MHz, using advanced beamforming, beam steering and beam tracking techniques to improve mmWave signals. The module includes a 5G radio transceiver, power management IC, RF front end and phased antenna array to form a complete system with the Snapdragon X50 modem.
Interestingly, the four QTM052 modules can be placed on a smartphone to increase the device's resistance to signal attenuation and other disturbances. This provides OEMs with a powerful alternative to bring their first high-speed 5G devices to market in early 2019, while allowing Engineers continue to work on a more streamlined second-generation model.
In contrast, the sub-6 GHz family of modules, including the QPM5650, QPM5651, QDM5650, and QDM5652, will enable devices to access 5G networks in less populated non-urban areas. Although all four modules support the same sub-6 GHz band, the P version includes a power amplifier, while the D version provides diversity support. They are all designed to support large-scale MIMO transmissions, which use multiple antennas to achieve high data rates.
Qualcomm said that all new components are currently sampling customers and are expected to appear on the first 5G smartphones early next year. However, Qualcomm has previously said that it will help some customers to launch equipment before this.
