nRF5340 integrates high-performance application processors, fully programmable ultra-low-power network processors, and advanced roots of trust and trusted execution security functions in a low-power multi-protocol SoC, which can be used for professional lighting, industrial automation, Advanced wearables and other complex IoT applications.
Nordic Semiconductor announced the nRF5340TM high-end multi-protocol system-on-chip (SoC), the first member of the next-generation nRF5 family of SoCs. nRF5340 is based on Nordic ’s proven nRF51 and nRF52 series of multi-protocol SoCs, which are widely used worldwide. At the same time, it introduces a new flexible dual-processor hardware architecture with advanced security functions. , Thread, and Zigbee.
The nRF5340 SoC is designed to extend the operating temperature to 105oC, while supporting multiple protocols and advanced security features, making it ideal for professional lighting and industrial applications. In addition, this SoC's high-performance application processor also comes with 512 KB of RAM to meet the needs of the next generation of cutting-edge wearable devices. The device has an extended QSPI peripheral interface that can be connected to external memory at 96 MHz. It also integrates a 32 MHz high-speed SPI peripheral that can be used as a display and complex sensor interface.
nRF5340 integrates ArmTrustZone's Arm CryptoCell-312 technology and secure key storage to provide the highest level of security. The device uses Arm CryptoCell-312 to hardware accelerate the most common Internet encryption standard, while Arm TrustZone provides system-wide hardware isolation for trusted software by creating secure and non-secure code execution zones on a single core. nRF5340's comprehensive security features enable advanced roots of trust and secure firmware updates while protecting the SoC from malicious attacks.
The nRF5340 is based on the Arm Cortex-M33 dual-core processor; one is a high-performance application processor running at up to 128 MHz (510 CoreMark) with dedicated 1 MB flash and 512 KB RAM; the other is running at 64 MHz (238 CoreMark) 's fully programmable ultra-low-power network processor with dedicated 256 KB flash and 64 KB memory.
The powerful application processor is extremely efficient, with 8 KB of two-channel associative cache, supports DSP and floating point functions, and provides voltage and frequency adjustment options. The application processor integrates Arm TrustZone's Arm Cryptocell-312 and secure encryption Key storage's advanced security features with various interface peripherals including NFC, USB, QSPI and high-speed SPI. Fully programmable network processor is more energy efficient (and optimized for low power and low duty cycle sensor acquisition during radio operation. Programmable network processor access provides an optimal implementation of the 2.4 GHz proprietary protocol To ensure the feasibility of migration from the nRF51 and nRF52 series.
The nRF5340 integrates a new power optimized multi-protocol 2.4 GHz radio with a TX current of 3.2 mA (0 dBm TX power, 3 V, DC / DC) and an RX current of 2.6 mA (3 V, DC / DC). Sleep current is as low as 1.1? A. This SoC is characterized by enhanced dynamic multi-protocol support, concurrent support for Bluetooth low energy and Bluetooth mesh / Thread / Zigbee operation, which can be configured / debugged via a smartphone using Bluetooth low energy, and interacts with the mesh network. The radio has all the functions of Bluetooth 5.1 direction finding. The nRF5340 can operate from a supply voltage range of 1.7 V to 5.5 V, allowing power from a rechargeable battery and USB. The SoC also integrates XTAL load capacitors for 32 MHz and 32.762 kHz crystals, which reduces the number of external components required by four compared to Nordic's nRF52 series, reduces bill of materials (BOM), and reduces solution size .
The nRF5340 software development kit nRF Connect SDK provides a complete solution, which integrates Zephyr RTOS, Bluetooth low energy protocol stack, application examples, and hardware drivers. The nRF Connect SDK is a reliable solution for developing nRF9160 SiP-based commercial products. With support for nRF5340, this SDK unifies low-power cellular IoT and low-power short-range wireless application development. The nRF Connect SDK is publicly hosted on GitHub, source code management is provided by Git, and free SEGGER Embedded Studio IDE support is provided. Nordic also introduced a low-cost nRF5340 single-board preview development kit, the nRF5340 PDK. Developers can use all the features and all GPIOs of the nRF5340. The PDK also includes an on-board SEGGER J-Link debugger for SoC programming and debugging.
Kjetil Holstad, director of product management at Nordic Semiconductor, said: "Bluetooth, Thread, Zigbee, and other low-power wireless technologies now form a key part of the Internet of Things. Developers are already developing applications based on technologies including real estate, location services, medical, smart home and industrial Future commercial products for highly complex applications such as the Internet of Things. These applications require higher computing power and security, but developers expect Nordic's wireless solutions to remain compact and energy efficient. "
"The nRF5340 SoC is designed to meet these needs and more. This product is not only the result of Nordic's decades of experience in the ultra-low-power wireless field, but also a summary of Nordic's experience in developing and supporting nRF51 and nRF52 series SoCs over the past seven years. It is the result of years of research and development by the world's most experienced low-power wireless product research and development team. By using the nRF5340 and nRF Connect SDK together, developers can easily build wireless applications that have not been achieved so far. "
