Nordic nRF9160 SiP cellular iot modules show up in the 2019 MWC

Published time: 2019-12-20 14:08:27

Nordic cellular Internet of things and low power wireless mesh solutions will be unveiled in Shanghai mobile communication industry.

Nordic Semiconductor has announced its participation in the Asian region's premier next generation communication technology event, 2019 MWC Shanghai. The exhibition, which will be held on June 26, solstice and 28, will cover 5G, cellular Internet of things, artificial intelligence (AI), big data and so on.Nordic, a leading manufacturer of wireless Internet of things solutions, will showcase the latest hardware, software and development tools in the E100 booth at the N2 hall of the new international expo center (SNIEC) in Shanghai.

Nordic will show off systems level packaging (SiP) technologies that make nRF9160 devices 10 x 16 x 1mm in size, the smallest size ever seen in the cellular Internet of things module industry, with up to three times the occupying area, up to two times the thickness and up to five times the overall package size. The nRF9160 SiP integrates an Arm cortex-m33 master processor, GPS, and all the components needed for cellular Internet of things operations (multimode cellular modems and transceivers, RF front ends, dedicated application processors, flash memory, RAM memory, power management, and crystal oscillator and passive components on a single chip).

Wendell Boyd, director of sales and marketing for Asia Pacific at Nordic Semiconductor, says, "the industry is still debating which communication platforms and protocols are best suited to support iot development. However, lte-m and nb-iot have become key technologies in the field of cellular Internet of things, and our nRF9160 SiP marks an important milestone in transforming design theory into engineering practice. We look forward to discussing the product and its application with the design community in Asia."

Nordic will also showcase award-winning nRF52840 system-level chips (SoC) that are Bluetooth® Low Energy /Bluetooth LE /Bluetooth 5, Thread 1.1 and Zigbee PRO (R21) and Green Power proxy certified. The nRF52840's 64MHz, 32-bit Arm®Cortex™M4F processor has sufficient general-purpose processing power and floating-point and DSP performance to meet the needs of the most challenging wireless applications. The SoC's radio architecture features a +8 dBm chip PA, 1MB of Flash memory, and 256 kB of RAM, as well as a full-speed USB 2.0 controller and many peripherals.NRF52840 also integrates an Arm cryptocell-310 accelerator to achieve the best security in its class.

Nordic will also show off the recently released nRF52811 SoC at the 2019 MWC Shanghai expo, providing a higher level of accessibility for applications that benefit from advanced wireless Internet of things capabilities, such as high positioning accuracy. Earlier this year, the bluetooth technology consortium (SIG) released the bluetooth core specification version 5.1, which supports a new feature called Direction Finding that improves the accuracy of real-time location services (RTLS) and indoor positioning systems. NRF52811 SoC also provides support. The bluetooth 5.1 direction finding function of the SoC makes the positioning solution not only depend on the received signal strength indicator (RSSI), but also on the actual direction of the signal, which not only significantly improves the accuracy, but also opens up new applications.
