Low-power GbE PHYs handle cable/optical

The two-port VSC8552 and four-port VSC8504 GbE PHYs for broadband access gateways, enterprise IP phones, switches, routers, and smart-grid devices feature low power and have SGMII/QSGMII MAC interfaces. The VSC8504 features EcoEthernet 2.0 technology that supports Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) with automatic link power-down and an intelligent algorithm that adjusts power based on cable length.

The chips’ full-speed power is 400 mW/port, no traffic is 160 mW, and no cable connection cuts power to 40 mW/port. The devices support IEEE 802.3bf timing and synchronization and come in 17-mm-square 256-pin BGA packages. (VSC8504, $11.50 ea/5,000 samples available now.)
