Ethernet switch chip has advanced features

The VSC7418 Serval Ethernet switch engine is optimized for power and cost-sensitive applications at the network edge, and is said to provide 75% lower power and 50% lower BOM cost than competitive options. The device has nine 10/100/1,000-Mbit/s SGMII/SerDes ports and two 2.5-G SGMII/SerDes ports.

The IC features a 416-MHz MIPS processor with DDR2/3 external memory and DMA-based frame extraction and insertion support. It also supports MPLS/MPLS-TP LER and LSR and LTE-advanced-ready IEEE 1588v2, along with advanced TCAM-based service SLA guarantees. The chip has full OAM in hardware and comes in a 24 × 24-mm thermally enhanced TQFP package. It takes 3 W typ over a –40° to 125°C operating range. (Price not available — samples December.)
