MALVERN, Pa. — Aug. 6, 2018 — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) released a new series of high power, high current mica grid resistors in the standard mill bank size. Offering designers a lower cost option to the standard stainless steel grid design, Vishay Milwaukee GREM resistors feature EDG technology for improvements in power capacity, weight, and watt density, while maintaining the same package size.

The devices released recently feature power of 8 kW at 40 °C, which is 23 % higher than standard 6500 W stainless steel grid resistors in the standard mill bank size. At the same time, GREM devices are 30 % lighter than stainless steel grid resistors with the same power dissipation, and offer a favorable price point. These specifications make the devices ideal for load banks, dynamic braking, and motor control in low vibration industrial and alternative energy applications.

Vishay Milwaukee resistor GREM is a new product that offers improvements to the standard mill bank size GRE1 used in motor control applications. With significant

improvements in power capacity, reduction in weight, and increased watt density, these standard banks can work great in load applications, braking applications, motor control, and testing applications as well.

GREM resistors feature a resistance range from 0.067 Ω to 24.273 Ω, with a tolerance of ± 10 %, temperature coefficients down ± 130 ppm/°C, and currents from 18 A to 345 A. The devices offer high temperature operation to +415 °C.

5.THE APPLICATIONS OF GREM RESISTORS

Dynamic Braking
When an electric motor driven load is being decelerated, the motor acts as a generator, converting kinetic energy of the load to electrical energy. The dynamic braking circuit converts this electrical energy into heat to slow the load, through the use of dynamic braking resistors. Braking resistors ensure proper motor operation, allow heavy loads to stop quickly and protect the drive from damage. Furthermore, dynamic braking resistors that are improperly cooled, incorrectly sized, physically damaged or electrically failed can cause costly unwanted down time.
