ON Semiconductor Introduces New Energy-Efficient Controller Solution for LED Lighting

ON Semiconductor, which promotes energy-efficient innovation, introduced two new LED lighting controller solutions. The dimmable NCL30386 and non-dimmable NCL30388 provide market-leading choices for designers of LED lighting devices such as lamps for offices and industrial buildings.

Both devices are high power factor (PF), single-segment, constant-current (CC), and constant-voltage (CV) for flyback, buck-boost, or single-ended primary-inductor converter (SEPIC) power topologies. Primary-side regulation (PSR) pulse width modulation (PWM) controller. They work in a quasi-resonant (QR) mode with energy efficiency levels exceeding the EU's Ecodesign, ENERGY STARTM and NEMA SSL.

The integrated digital power factor correction (PFC) algorithm ensures leading market, PF greater than 0.95, and less than 10% total harmonic distortion (THD) over the universal input voltage range. The integrated high-voltage startup current source ensures fast start-up, low standby energy consumption, and wide-range output operation. The current and voltage are regulated through a digital PSR CC/CV loop control, typically within ±2% of the range, providing extremely uniform illumination brightness under all conditions.

These devices are simple to use and operate over a wide voltage (VCC) range of 9.2 - 26 VDC. They feature valley-locking and frequency reversal to ensure high energy efficiency over the entire voltage range. It further simplifies the design of LED lighting applications by including safety functions such as undervoltage and overvoltage protection, as well as detecting short circuits in the output, windings, and diodes.Both the NCL30386 and NCL30388 do not require many external components to complete the design, reducing time-to-market, bill of materials (BoM) costs, and reducing the space required to implement a complete lighting solution.

In addition, the NCL30386 offers excellent dimming capabilities, including linear or quadratic dimming curve options. The wide analog dimming range is controlled by two dedicated analog/PWM control pins, enabling precise dimming with a minimum dimming ratio of 0.5% and no audible noise.
